Chapter Sixteen

The Key Grub

L eonard and the others followed close behind as Biter quickly led them away from the trap door into a forested area to the south.

“I’m impressed you still know your way around the Clouds after all that time Down Below,” said Boulderhead.

“Yes, my prince, I don’t think I could ever forget the Clouds and its various nooks and niches. I do love this land so, and I am happy to be back. Even when I was with those lesser goblins Down Below, I thought of this place, running pictures of it in my mind to keep the memory of it from fading. I am proud of my origins and proud of my service to your house, long may you reign.”

Boulderhead laughed. “Thank you, Biter, but I think my reign ended shortly after I escaped the Clouds. Another power has taken charge, and I’m afraid my father’s house is little more than an old story by this point.”

The spaces between the gigantic trees started out big but got closer the farther they went into the wood. Thick patches of underbrush appeared, too, and quickly filled most of the forest floor.

“I still can’t believe how big everything is here,” said Hubert as he walked past an acorn as big as a duckling. “And that it’s all up in the clouds!”

“I agree,” said Leonard. “That old magic you mentioned before, Merlin, must be the most powerful magic of all if it can hold up all of this weight.”

“Well, let’s see. How can I explain this?” said Merlin. “The Land of the Clouds is not actually in the clouds.”

“How d’ya mean?” said Ham.

“The Vine acts as a pathway, or a door, to another land not physically connected to our own. It’s like a rope through a hole in the ceiling leading up to another floor. Although the area around the trap door looks down through the clouds on our own lands, were you to walk in the opposite direction you would not reach another edge in the clouds. This land just keeps going. Much like our own.”

“Our world is flat, and if you walk too far, you’ll fall off the edge and get eaten by sea monsters,” said Hubert with absolute certainty.

“Yes, well, we’ll have to talk about that sometime as I’ve strong experiential evidence the Earth is actually round like a ball.”

“Ha, a ball! Now that’s what I call funny!” said Taddy. “Were that true, we would all roll off into the void.”

“Perhaps,” said Merlin.

They reached an impenetrable wall of undergrowth—a tangle of oversized shrubs, “small” trees, and bramble. Boulderhead started stepping on the bushes, which were still huge by Down Below standards, to clear a path for them, but Biter stopped him.

“My prince, I would advise against blazing a trail into this growth as it will make it much easier for our enemies to follow us. Uh, also, some of the growth will fight back, if you catch my meaning.”

“How are we to get through this dense tangle?” said Boulderhead.
